A New Type of Deck Builder

Players: 1-8 | Time: 20 minutes per player

The Synopsis

Ignite is a deck builder where you use your deck to battle your opponents across an expansive, variably-built board. Each player is in charge of 3 miniatures, with 3 hit points each (represented as daggers placed into the back of each miniature). The player with the last miniature standing, wins.

The Story

There has been relative peace for years in the land of Oshos, but no longer. The land is becoming desolate, uninhabitable, filled with barren plains and lava fields. Many believe this is a side-effect of excessive magic usage, and blame it on the wielders of magic. But no matter the reason, all the inhabitants of Oshos understand that the land can no longer support them all. To ensure your race’s survival, you must achieve victory in battle, driving all others out of the land.

The Cards

Each card in the player’s hand of 6 can generally be used in 1 of 3 ways: out of turn (if the card allows), for their battle effect (on your turn), or for their buying power (called honor). The fun comes from figuring out how to use your cards, as well as figuring out which to buy. Do you finish off the dwarf that’s limping away from the last battle, or do you use those cards to buy the Meteor Strike spell you’ve been needing? Do you buy a Horse for increased mobility, the last 2 Ice Arrows for ranged attacks, or a Metal Shield to prevent damage?

The Board

The board is variable, so you’ll never have the same game twice. Squares are either grass (neutral), forest (safe from most ranged attacks, but susceptible to fire), water (used in various spells, but susceptible to lightning and freezing), or lava (instant death). The fun comes from using the terrain to your advantage, whether it’s using a wind arrow to send someone into a lava pit, or running to the forest to escape a recently built catapult.

The Village & Bazaar

Along the outskirts of Oshos lies a village, and in the center there is a bazaar. You can only buy as many cards per turn as you have units in the village and bazaar. An added bonus of being in the bazaar is that you can sell 1 card (per unit in the bazaar) for its initial cost when buying a card. The fun comes from figuring out whether to risk going to the bazaar and how long to stay there. It can be very powerful for thinning your deck, but also very dangerous as other races will attack you for your spot.

A New Type of Deck Builder

The deck builder genre is very loved by many, but the most common criticism is that it really boils down to solitaire, with very little player interaction. Ignite is the game I always wanted, where making the leanest, meanest deck, means you can trounce your opponents in combat (no dice allowed). When I tell someone I’m making a battle deck builder with a map and miniatures, their eyes usually light up, understanding all of the amazing possibilities this system lends itself to.
